Fall: Healthy Habits

We live in an upside-down world!

North of the equator, fall begins in September; in the Southern Hemisphere (Australia, etc.), it starts in March.

I live in the Northern Hemisphere, where Fall officially began in the last week of September.

We’re accustomed to October’s moderate temperatures and moderate rainfall. Throughout the day, temperatures typically settle at around 60°F (16°C.) by evening, they drop to around 47°F (8°C.) This Fall was unusual, with record-breaking temperatures hovering between 70°F (21°C) and 81°F (27°C) in early October.

But, the reprieve was short-lived. To my chagrin, the robust Fall temperatures kicked in mid-October, averaging between 36°F  (2°C) and 48°F (9°C.) Winter is around the corner! BrrBut, as the leaves change colors and the air turns crisp, fall heralds a season of transformation and rejuvenation. It’s the perfect time to nurture your body and mind, preparing yourself for the colder months ahead. I’ve reflected on how I got through this season in past years.

To help you maintain my well-being and vitality, I’ve used a range of healthy habits tailored to this season.

Express Gratitude Daily – Fall is a time of harvest and gratitude. Take a few moments each day to reflect on the things you’re thankful for. Keeping a gratitude journal can shift your focus from stressors to positive aspects of your life, enhancing your overall mental and emotional resilience.

Practice Mindful Eating – Fall often tempts us with indulgent treats, but mindful eating can help maintain balance. Savor each bite, paying attention to flavors and textures. Listen to your body’s hunger and fullness cues, ensuring you enjoy seasonal delights without overindulging.

Prioritize Mental Wellness – The change in seasons can sometimes affect our mood and energy levels. Combat the fall blues by dedicating time to self-care and relaxation. Practice mindfulness, meditation, or yoga to center your mind. Additionally, consider pursuing creative hobbies like painting, writing, or crafting, which can be both therapeutic and enjoyable.

Maintain a Consistent Sleep Schedule – As the days grow shorter, it’s essential to prioritize quality sleep. Create a calming bedtime routine, dim the lights in the evening, and limit screen time before bed. Establishing a consistent sleep schedule helps regulate your body’s internal clock, ensuring you wake up refreshed and ready to tackle the day.

Cultivate a Relaxing Bedtime Ritual – With the days getting shorter, it’s essential to prioritize restorative sleep. Create a calming bedtime ritual to signal to your body that it’s time to unwind. This could include reading a book, taking a warm bath, or practicing gentle stretches. Ensure your sleep environment is comfortable, with cozy blankets and soft lighting, encouraging deep and rejuvenating slumber.

Create a Cozy Reading Nook – Fall encourages us to spend more time indoors, making it the perfect season to indulge in the pleasure of reading. Designate a corner of your home as a cozy reading nook. Decorate it with soft cushions, warm blankets, and soft lighting. Having a designated space for reading encourages you to unwind, escape into the pages of a good book, and foster a sense of relaxation.

Pamper Your Skin with Natural Remedies – As the air becomes drier, your skin may require extra care. Opt for natural remedies like honey, oatmeal, or coconut oil for skincare. These ingredients are not only gentle but also possess moisturizing and healing properties. Consider indulging in DIY face masks or body scrubs made from these natural ingredients, providing your skin with the nourishment it needs to glow throughout the fall season.

Engage in Mindful Walking – Take advantage of the crisp autumn air by practicing mindful walking. As you stroll amidst falling leaves and nature’s changing colors, focus on your senses. Feel the earth beneath your feet, listen to the rustle of leaves, and breathe in the fresh air. Mindful walking can be meditative, allowing you to connect with nature and yourself, fostering mental clarity and calmness.

Practice Gratitude Through Acts of Kindness – In the spirit of giving, fall provides numerous opportunities to practice gratitude through acts of kindness. Consider volunteering at local shelters, donating warm clothes to those in need, or simply reaching out to neighbors and friends. Acts of kindness not only benefit others but also foster a sense of fulfillment and gratitude within you, enriching your overall well-being.

Stay Active Indoors – As the weather cools, bring your workouts indoors. Explore home-based exercises like yoga, Pilates, or bodyweight workouts. Alternatively, consider dancing or even trying out virtual fitness classes. Regular physical activity boosts your mood and keeps you energized despite the autumn chill.

Nourish with Seasonal Foods – Fall brings a bounty of nutritious and delicious produce. Embrace the vibrant colors of autumn by incorporating seasonal fruits and vegetables like apples, pumpkins, sweet potatoes, and Brussels sprouts into your meals. These foods are not only rich in vitamins and minerals but also provide antioxidants to boost your immune system.

Stay Hydrated – While the weather cools down, it’s easy to forget to stay properly hydrated. However, hydration remains crucial for your overall health. Opt for warm herbal teas, infused water, and nourishing soups. These hydrating options will not only keep you warm but also support your body’s natural detoxification processes.

Engage in Outdoor Activities – Don’t let the dropping temperatures confine you indoors. Fall offers a picturesque backdrop for outdoor activities. Take brisk walks amidst the falling leaves, hike in nature reserves, or indulge in seasonal activities like apple picking and corn mazes. Engaging in these activities will not only keep you physically active but also uplift your mood.

Boost Immunity with Superfoods – Incorporate immune-boosting superfoods like turmeric, ginger, and garlic into your meals. These ingredients have natural antiviral properties, perfect for fortifying your body against common fall ailments. Add them to soups, stews, or smoothies for a flavorful and health-enhancing twist.

Embrace Seasonal Aromatherapy – Harness the power of aromatherapy to create a cozy and calming atmosphere at home. Scents like cinnamon, vanilla, and lavender can evoke feelings of warmth and relaxation. Use essential oils or scented candles to infuse your space with these delightful fragrances, promoting a sense of well-being.

Explore Warm and Nutritious Soups – Fall is the perfect season for hearty, nutrient-packed soups. Experiment with various ingredients like butternut squash, lentils, or kale to create flavorful and filling soups. These not only provide essential nutrients but also offer a comforting and satisfying meal on chilly evenings. Homemade soups are also a great way to control ingredients and minimize processed foods.

And last but not least, Reflect and Set Intentions – As the year draws to a close, fall offers a natural pause for reflection. Take this time to assess your goals, both personal and professional. Celebrate your achievements, learn from challenges, and set intentions for the coming months. Reflecting on your journey can provide valuable insights, empowering you to make conscious decisions and set meaningful goals for the future.

When I integrate four or five of these practices into my daily life, it not only enhances my physical health but also nurtures my mental and emotional well-being.

Of course, if you already incorporate some of these habits in your life, good on you! Keep it up!

Embracing wellness during the Fall season is not just a routine; it’s a mindful and nurturing lifestyle.

Fall becomes a season of self-discovery, self-care, and gratitude. As you continue your journey through this transformative season, may you find peace in the simplicity of these habits, and may they guide you toward a harmonious and fulfilling life.

Happy Fall, and may your days be filled with wellness and joy!
